Getting engaged: Japanese style | 結納しました

Last November, my wonderful boyfriend at that time proposed to me on Maui Island. He surprised me with the perfect proposal that I had dreamed of since I was a little girl. I said "yes" and so we got engaged... but that was western style...! On June 1st, I got officially engaged, traditional Japanese style.

In the ceremony, we had to exchange gifts for the other family, and for each other. Usually, the bride receives an engagement ring (I had to put it back in the box and give it back right before the ceremony! lol), and a watch or tie pin for the groom.

We went back near where my parents live in Nagoya. We had the ceremony in a restaurant with the perfect view of the Nagoya Castle.

This is a set of gifts from my fiancé's family. We exchange these sets and they can go from simple to super fancy.

The type of kimono that I'm wearing is a "Furisode". Only unmarried girls are allowed to wear them, and I think this will be the last time I would wear this in my life. Not sure if I'll miss wearing it because it was my second time I wore it, and it is not the most comfortable thing you can wrap around your body...

Now we've got this ceremony over with, and our wedding venue is booked for March 2015! (checked off of my 100 resolutions!) I plan to document my wedding planning on this blog so stay tuned for more! :)
